Demo Reel progress

Hello everyone! Might you spare a moment to check out my demo reel? It's really close to completion just a few tweaks, the robot at the end to render out, and the final credits to add to.

References

I saw this off of James Gurney's blog and thought it was rather neat to see, and helpful, I know when I was working on my Frogasaur that I scrounged around for the most worthwhile references. Whenever tutoring or giving advice to people I insist to study life, observe, draw from it and look at the details. After all, it's the way to learn and what every artist I look up to has told me.

Another one of a crocodile it has a neat recording of a croc running.

On the topic of animals, I recently learned of a wonderful animal concept artist, Terryl Whitlatch. Her stuff is brilliant! She recently published a book Animals Real and Imagined, definitely when I get the chance I plan on picking it up, it looks interesting and full of detailed creature illustrations and tips.

The other release I was excited to hear was they republished Andrew Loomis's books, Andrew Loomis booklist, I could only find internet archive versions previously but no one had them for sale, so to see such a great resource re-released is exciting.

Here's a link I saw posted through Clay Kaytis of Animation Podcast on Twitter. Acting Blog Good tips for actors even if only for acting out animations!

Demo Reel Layout

Gathering my work for my demo reel I finally nailed my art direction based on my current personal branding.

This one I tweaked from my first pass, the dots seemed a bit to strong in the above.

On the left is the models, showing turn arounds and animations, with subtle passes of wire frames.

On the right is the different textures, that'll cycle through.
The little dots on the side bar and top swirl border are subtly moving as each model is on the screen.

Concepts and Illustrations

Trying a bit of a different technique with these concepts to get a rough idea of different costumes. I kind of like it, keeps the mind freeflowing and loose, and they seem to have a bit of a cartoony kids item sort of flair to them.

Condran's Illustrations

Currently working on the last few of the illustrations for Jeffrey Condran. I'll start with a small thumbnail, then enlarge it to a 11x17 bristol board, after that scan it in then paint!

Business cards

Finally got my cards officially printed through a nice company, Overnight Prints. I heard of them through fellow graduates at the Art Institute. I can't wait to get them and see how they turned out since I ordered rounded corners and specific glossy sections and it wasn't that expensive at all!

Different variations, the front stays the same while there's a different background images, two for illustrations and 1 more in the works for 3D work.

One step closer to being ready for Siggraph! I am officially going this year, and am ecstatic! Now just to finish up the renders for my demo reel and burn it's DVDs as well upload it to my site through my Vimeo. Stay tuned it'll be here soon!

In other news I found out I got a wonderful mention on The Foundry's Twitter feed yesterday:
The Foundry VFX - Twitter
They referred this blog when I was talking about their program Mari in a previous post, that was a very pleasant surprise. I am extremely grateful for the mention!

So that being said I finally joined Twitter, you can follow me here:  (I had to thank them for their generosity! I am really grateful for it ;o)

Earlier this week too I updated the layout graphics and design of this page to something much more suiting and matching my website.

Character group illustration

A design I made for t-shirts and screen printed I wanted to paint for fun so I decided to pull it out again as a warm up. It's only in progress and I definitely want and plan on refining the shading and colors some more after my freelance is complete.  A perfect piece for a self-promotion at graduation/job hunting at least on my website. ;o)
